Decorate a yard for Halloween with pumpkins, wooden railings and skeletons.

Decorate your yard for Halloween to welcome trick-or-treaters on Halloween night or to welcome guests to a spooky night of fun if you're hosting a holiday party. Choose decorations that fit in with the mood you're trying to create, whether it's a low-key welcome or an all-out party with a definite theme, such as a spooky graveyard. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Themes

    • Themed decorations in your yard can coordinate with your Halloween party or simply provide the ambiance you want visitors to experience as they approach your house. Take a cue from your favorite scary movie, and create a cornfield scene with an old, worn-down scarecrow. Opening coffin-shaped boxes or contraptions on the lawn with bats hanging from the trees will work for a vampire theme. You can build an old abandoned cemetery on your front lawn with dilapidated faux headstones, skeletons, dead plants and spiderwebs. Silhouettes of witches, black cats, brooms and a cauldron are fitting for a witch theme.

    Lighting

    • Lighting plays a big role in creating a spooky setting. Hang old-looking lanterns from the trees, or place them in front of mock headstones or along walkways. Using LED candles inside will provide safety. Old candelabras or candle holders can hold LED lights dripping with ghoulish slime or covered with fake spiderwebs. You can use LED candles inside pumpkins carved with spooky scenes or decorative carvings that let off a design of light. Alternatively, carving holes into the pumpkins will allow you to have rubber mice snakes coming out of them. Hang strings of orange miniature lights around the trees or frame of your home.

    Props

    • Large props can sit out in your yard or be rigged to pop out at unsuspecting visitors. Display a fake head in a jar with liquid that looks like formaldehyde, and scatter severed limbs or fingers around the jar. Ghost-like shapes made from white sheets or dummies dressed like witches or zombies can add to the spookiness of your yard. Hang a few of your faux ghosts or witches from the trees for a more dramatic approach. A slew of zombies with body parts peeking up out of the dirt like they're trying to crawl out of their graves, along with a few that appear to be coming after your visitors, will create a haunting feel.

    Inflatable

    • Inflatable Halloween yard decor is typically simple to set up and more lighthearted than other options. Figures or life-size characters, witches and ghosts can complement other decorations or add a small decoration to your yard. Other inflatable decor includes large snow globes with images of flying witches, spiders, ghosts and other common Halloween figures. Some inflatable decorations include moving parts or changing images. Tie down inflatable decorations with rope to prevent them from flying off with the wind.
