Help youth understand Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego's faith through craft projects.

Don't neglect the powerful biblical story of three young men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, just because you can't find any available craft ideas. Youth can easily create crafts from typical craft items such as paper, markers and glue, while making a powerful presentation backdrop for the boys' story.

  1. Significance

    • Draw youth into your retelling of the biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego by having them help create visual effects of the story before you tell it. Engage them with craft projects that highlight the key points of the story, such as the fiery furnace, the characters’ presence in the furnace, and their commitment to serve God despite the consequences.

    Fiery Furnace Craft

    • Have youth create a fiery furnace for their Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego characters. Provide red construction paper, rulers and black felt tip markers. Instruct them how to draw lines on the page to replicate bricks on a wall. Provide pieces of yellow and orange construction paper and pairs of safety scissors. Distribute fire flame-shaped patterns you cut out for them to use in making their own yellow and orange flames. Place bottles of glue on the craft table for use in adhering cut out flames onto their brick wall once they are made and cut out of yellow and orange construction paper.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego Paper Characters

    • Hand out half a sheet each of purple, green and brown construction paper and scissors to each youth. Instruct them to cut three triangles, then remove the top off each triangle so the top is flat. Demonstrate how they are to draw a line on each side of the triangle (midway down the triangle) that goes in straight toward the center slightly, then veers down at an angle toward the triangles bottom point on the left (the right point for the right side of the triangle). They should now have what looks like larger triangles sitting on top of smaller triangles. These are robes for their three biblical characters. Provide printed-out face and neck shapes (with hair) from magazine cut-outs for them to glue onto the robe-shaped tops, and a pair of printed praying hands to glue onto the middle of each robe. Have them use leftover yellow or orange construction paper pieces to make sashes to glue onto the middle of the robes.

    Bible Verse Banner

    • Instruct youth to write on white construction paper, while you provide the bible verse portion of the story: “We want you to know, your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold.” Ask each youth to glue the verse on the top portion of their fiery furnace craft page. Ask them if they would be as willing as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to stand up for their Christian beliefs if threatened with a fiery death.
