Scholarships for Military Descendants
The descendants of current and former military personnel have an advantage when applying for college scholarships simply because so many organizations offer scholarship support to the dependents of soldiers and veterans. Different programs are open to the descendants of active-duty personnel, veterans or those wounded and killed in action. Others are open only to the descendants of personnel from specific service branches.

Active-Duty Descendant Scholarships
-
Fisher House Foundation (militaryscholars.org) scholarships are available to undergraduate students of age 23 or less who are the descendants of active-duty soldiers from any branch of the service. Sons and daughters of active-duty personnel who are pursuing undergraduate study and are age 24 or under may be eligible for scholarships from the organization ThanksUSA (thanksusa.org). The Pat Tillman Foundation (pattillmanfoundation.org) is another organization that provides financial assistance to the descendants of active-duty military personnel.
Scholarships for Descendants of Veterans
-
As with students whose parents are active-duty soldiers, the descendants of veterans are also eligible for a number of national scholarship programs. The Mike Nash Memorial Scholarship Fund (vva.org) is available to the descendants of veterans who served in the Vietnam war. The Retired Enlisted Association (trea.org) offers tuition aid to high school students who are the descendants of former soldiers. Another organization that offers scholarships to the descendants of veterans is AMVETS (amvets.org).

Scholarships for Survivors
-
Students whose parents have been permanently disabled or killed because of their military service are also eligible for several scholarship programs. Scholarships for the descendants of wounded and disabled soldiers are offered by the Military Order of the Purple Heart (purpleheart.org) and the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund (freedomalliance.org). Organizations offering scholarships to the descendants of military personnel killed in action include the Folds of Honor Foundation (foldsofhonor.org) and the American Legion (legion.org).
Scholarships for Branch Descendants
-
Some scholarships for military descendants are open only to the children of soldiers who perform certain duties or serve in certain branches. For example, the Daedalian Foundation (daedalians.org) offers scholarships to the descendants of military pilots. Organizations that offer tuition aid to the descendants of personnel from specific military branches include Army Emergency Relief (aerhq.org), the Army Reserve Association (armyreserve.org), the Marine Corp Scholarship Foundation (mcsf.org), the Air Force Aid Society (afas.org) and the Navy League of the United States (navyleague.org).
