A business analyst is crucial to companies looking to understand and improve internal structures. To be successful, a business analyst must exhibit certain skills and traits. He must understand the business he is analyzing, be able to convey his analysis in a clear and concise manner and be thorough enough to cover all aspects of the company.

  1. Analytical

    • Analyst must delve into the workings of a company and extract the information needed to develop strategies. The analyst must be able to identify and understand what he is looking at. For example, a financial analyst must know exactly how a financial statement is put together, what the numbers represent and what those numbers mean for the company in question. Missing any detail could potentially lead a client into a weak investment.

    Organizational

    • An analyst deals with a multitude of data in performing her job. She must be able to keep the data clear and accessible. To this end, she must possess strong organizational skills. If she can’t keep the information organized and clear, she runs the risk of making errors or omissions. Leaving details out can muddle the overall picture of the company. With aspects missing, any strategy runs the risk of being incomplete or ineffective.

    Technical

    • Analysts make heavy use of computer software. While many utilize programs like Microsoft Word or Excel for reports and spreadsheets, many companies use specific analysis software. While it would be improbable to expect an analyst to be familiar with every system, he must be technically sound enough to learn a new program quickly. If he can’t adapt to a company’s software, he likely will not be able to effectively perform his job.

    Communication

    • In the end, an analyst needs to convey her findings to her employers or clients. Knowing and understanding the data she has compiled is a large part of the job. However, if she can’t report these findings in a straight-forward, coherent style, she will not be effective as an analyst. She must possess strong written skills to put together reports and strong verbal skills to present these reports to management.
