Scholarships for Deceased Veterans' Children in California
If your deceased father or mother was a U.S. military veteran, you are eligible for scholarship funding when you attend a post-secondary institution. Students living in California can take advantage of such programs offered by private foundations, veterans' organizations, or colleges in the state university system. Private Foundations

If your deceased parent was a U.S. military veteran, various private foundations have scholarship opportunities available for you. For instance, Scholarships for Military Children is sponsored by the Fisher House Foundation. Hundreds of awards are given out annually through the program with the maximum award at $1,500. You must be the child of active duty, retired or deceased military personnel to apply. Other program requirements include enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program and a 3.0 grade point average.
AMVETS Program

The AMVETS program offers awards ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 that can be used for tuition reimbursement at state colleges and institutions that offer online degree programs. You must demonstrate financial need, have a background of academic excellence and had been the dependent of a deceased members of the military. Some branches of AMVETS in California provide their own funding to students. For instance, the AMVETS of La Mesa offer about 40 scholarships each year to members and their dependents. Amounts and award procedures vary each year based on available funding.

State Programs

The California Department of Veterans Affairs offers funding to students to attend colleges in California. If you are a child of a veteran who has died, you may be able to receive a full tuition and fee waiver. Fill out an application online through the California Association of County Veterans Service Officers website (cacvso.org). The student should not make more than $11,161 per year to be eligible for the program. The application should include details about your income and college plans as well as your parent’s military service. A copy of your birth certificate may be requested to prove your relationship to the veteran.
College Programs

Many state universities in California have a veteran’s office on campus to help you determine eligibility for aid if your parent has died and served in the military. For instance, the California State University East Bay campus provides advice and scholarship applications for dependents of active duty and deceased veterans. Qualified students do not have to pay tuition at the university for four-year attendance.
To receive funding at colleges in the state university system, dependents of veterans between the ages of 18 and 26 should fill out V.A. application form 22-1990 and submit it to their regional Veterans Affairs office. Eligible candidates should be the dependent of a veteran who died in the line of duty or as a result of a disability that occurred while in service.The Dependents' Educational Assistance program pays for up to 45 months of educational benefits.
