Real estate assistants may be licensed or unlicensed.

Negotiating deals, organizing paperwork, taking phone calls, showing properties, meeting clients, designing marketing materials and pricing listings are just some of the tasks a real estate agent must handle. For this reason, many agents and real estate offices hire assistants to help them keep on top of their duties.

  1. Duties

    • Assistants in the real estate industry may or may not hold a real estate license, but the duties they perform depend heavily on whether they have this credential. Unlicensed assistants focus more on administrative duties: they may build and manage realtor websites, conduct email campaigns, create printed marketing material, manage client databases and field phone calls. Although tasks permitted a licensed real estate assistant vary from state to state, they may also show property to a prospective buyer, explain contracts and other documents, collect money and conduct open houses.

    Salary

    • Assistants to real estate offices are generally considered similar to administrative positions in other offices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS, as of 2010, secretaries and administrative assistants in the United States earned a median annual wage of $30,830, or $14.82 per hour. Those categorized as executive secretaries and assistants earned a higher median annual salary of $43,520, or $20.92 per hour.

    Salary by Region

    • Secretarial and administrative assistant salaries varied significantly by region. According to the BLS, the Washington D.C. area paid these workers among the highest annual mean wage at $43,610, or $20.97 per hour, and northwestern Oklahoma paid among the lowest, at $24,570, or $11.81 per hour. Executive assistant salaries were substantially higher, with Santa Fe, New Mexico paying the highest annual mean wage of $60,660, or $29.16 per hour, and eastern Montana paying among the lowest at $33,680, or $16.19 per hour.

    Training

    • Although many real estate assistants train on the job, some programs do offer administrative instruction specifically for the real estate industry. Unlicensed Real Estate Training Center offers online instruction in listing and marketing coordination, basic real estate terms and transaction coordination. REVA online offers a coaching and mentoring program to help virtual real estate assistants set up their business. In addition, the Arizona School of Real Estate & Business offers a 20-hour program covering title and escrow, market research and advertising.
