Headstones sales companies may have open displays for you to choose from.

Headstones are crafted in a variety of sizes and shapes with granite, marble or bronze materials. A process is in place for you to select and custom order headstones for a family member or your own cemetery plot. The headstone sales company storefront representative or online service leads you through the process to pick out an upright, bench, pillow or flat stone. Before and after the ordering process is over, there are arrangements for you to make to prepare for the headstone to be delivered to the cemetery.

  1. Cemetery Regulations

    • The municipality or church-owned property where the cemetery is located may have requirements for the size, color and type of headstones to be placed there. Contact the cemetery sextant at his office or the municipal office to inquire if there are regulations about the use of headstones. The individual cemetery owners may have employees who set the stones in, or regulations may require that the headstone delivery company provide laborers to permanently set them in place. You also need to find out if there are certain hours of the day when deliveries must be made to the cemetery.

    Ordering a Headstone

    • Visit a headstone sales storefront or an online service. You should set a reasonable budget for the headstones that you need for a loved one or for your own cemetery lot. This can be an emotional time, so a budget is a wise move. Get a copy of the sales form, graphics order, payment and delivery contract from the sales person or online service. Inquire if the company offers a service to permanently set up the headstone. Setup may include digging into the ground, pouring a concrete base and accurately lowering the stone onto it for a permanent placement.

    Delivery

    • The headstone sales company will give you a delivery date after the stone is ordered and paid for. The company may have a delivery service or contract to have their headstone products delivered. The service must have specific directions to the cemetery location and the lot location for a timely delivery. Headstones are delivered on a truck that may have a crane or hydraulic system to enable the delivery person to lower the pieces to the ground safely.

    Inspection

    • You should visit the cemetery or ask a representative to go to the location to inspect the stone as soon as possible. The ideal time to inspect the stone is when it arrives on the delivery truck and before it is permanently set in place. The stone should be checked to ensure that you have the shape, size and type of stone that you ordered. The graphics, name and dates that have been engraved or reproduced on the stone must be reviewed to determine that everything is spelled correctly and the dates are accurate. Make sure that the stone is to be or has been set properly on the lot and in the correct location.
