Medieval Ribbon Maypole Hairstyles

May Day, or the first day of May, was a medieval celebration. Although it encompassed many rituals, depending on where it was held, part of the May Day celebration was the maypole. Those in medieval England adorned the maypole with flowers and branches, as well as ribbons tied to the maypole for the maypole dance. Young women would clutch the ends of the ribbon and dance around the maypole. Today medieval maypole ribbon hairstyles are popular for brides, especially those that want an old-fashioned fantasy theme on their wedding day. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Braids

    • In medieval times women and girls commonly braided their hair for maypole festivities and then covered the hair with an acceptable bonnet or head-shaped hat. During some periods of time this occurred because it was considered unladylike to expose the hair in public. Today, however, you can use braiding in your medieval hairstyle in a variety of ways. For example, create a half-up, half-down style by braiding the sides of your hair and pulling the braids back, connecting the braids together with ribbon and placing flowers around the back of your head. Remember to coordinate your hairstyle with that of your bridesmaids if you're getting married.

    Ribbon

    • Weave ribbon in the braids that you create by separating the hair, then placing the end of a length of ribbon at the top of one of the hair strands. Braid the hair in the desired manner. The ribbon will become part of the braid. With assistance, you can also elect to use multiple colors of ribbon and weave them into the braid with each hair section having a length of ribbon used in creating the braid. Yet ribbon does not have to only be present in the braid, but can flow from the top of the head, down the back. Flower girls, for example, can have multiple lengths of ribbon extending from a bunch of carefully designed flowers.

    Flowers

    • If you're getting married, flowers should not only mimic the wedding colors, but should be reminiscent of the medieval time period you are creating for your wedding. Use flowers such as daffodils, primrose and narcissus as part of your hairdo. One of these flowers may be all you require on the side of your head for a delicate look, while you may also elect to create a floral headdress of ribbons and daffodils similar to a crown, with your hair crimped beneath the headdress.

    Up or Down

    • Whether worn up or down, your hair should appear to have a loose, romantic appearance to it. Worn down, crimped or loosely curled tresses should cascade over the shoulders for long hair. On top of the head a wreath of ribbons and flowers is sometimes used, or ribbons and flowers are attached to the hair with bobby pins. Worn up, styles are sometimes full around the face and twisted or bunched at the back of the head. Where the hair is pinned up in the back, flowers and/or ribbons are attached around the hair. Play with the placement of the flowers and ribbons to get the look you desire.
