Amateur Choir Christmas Presentation Ideas
Christmas provides opportunities for amateur choirs to perform creative seasonal presentations for family and patrons. Most choirs do four or five events per year and Christmas usually offers one of the major events. Use of traditional Christmas music may invite the audience to sing along or just enjoy the presentation. Does this Spark an idea?

Caroling at the Mall
-
Amateur choirs can perform as roving carolers. Large malls often allow local choirs to perform in the mall during the Christmas season. Some dress in traditional 18th or 19th century garb and wander through the mall, stopping in open areas to sing a capella, before moving on to the next open area. Alternatively, some amateur choirs perform mall presentations in choir robes or street clothing and stage in a central area with musical accompaniment. Programs may last an hour or more with a short break in the middle.
Religious Programs
-
Amateur choirs often perform religious carols during Christmas programs. A choir could retell the Christmas narrative using songs such as “O, Little Town of Bethlehem,” “We Three Kings of Orient Are” and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night.” The choir may choose to intersperse the songs with readings from the Gospel of Luke or the Gospel of Matthew. If the choir is affiliated with a local church, the concert could take place in the church auditorium or fellowship hall.

Secular Programs
-
Not everyone sees Christmas as a religious holiday and some amateur choirs may prefer to keep their programs secular in nature. Traditional favorites such as “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and Santa songs provide plenty of options for singing. Secular programs may appeal to merchants who will open their lobby to the choir or invite them to sing outside the store when weather permits. Alternatively, choirs may carol door-to-door in neighborhoods or nursing homes, singing to the residents.
Dramatized Concerts
-
Various Christmas musicals provide options amateur choirs can use for their holiday presentation. From adaptations of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” to “The Gift of the Fourth Magi,” choirs willing to invest in some scenery, costumes and dramatic acting can offer some spectacular seasonal presentations. Local theater houses and area churches may provide space and interested patrons to fill the seats for multiple performances. Some churches may also have Biblical costumes the choir could borrow for nativity-based dramas.
Benefits
-
One traditional Christmas theme includes giving gifts to those in need. Local amateur choirs can promote their Christmas presentation as a benefit for area charities such as food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Publicity information could request gifts of canned food, toiletries, blankets and other materials needed by the sponsored charity. Churches and area nonprofit organizations may offer space for the presentation and assist with publicity efforts. The choir can finish the production knowing they will benefit members of the community who need assistance and a dose of Christmas cheer.
