The Sony Vaio TT's ultrathin design may leave it more vulnerable to overheating.

The Sony Vaio TT laptop offersd high performance in a thin design. Although a benefit to movie fans and gamers, this combination also helped to compound one common and laptop-threatenting problem faced by all laptop owners – overheating. Most causes and symptoms of overheating span the various laptop brands without prejudice, affecting the small, inexpensive machines just as easily and readily as the large, expensive brands. The Vaio TT's unique specifications, however, leave it vulnerable to the possibility of overheating moreso than some other laptops.

  1. Symptoms

    • When your Sony Vaio TT becomes too hot, your laptop's performance will suffer. Typically symptoms of an overheating laptop include a fan that runs non-stop or is excessively loud, increasingly frequent computer freezes or crashes and unexpected shutdowns. As the internal temperature climbs, your Vaio's delicate electronic components become vulnerable to damage such as warping. To save itself from this damage, your laptop will shut itself down without warning and to allow time for the components to cool.

    Causes

    • Common causes of overheating in laptops include blocked air vents, by external objects or internal debris, and dirty fans. Your Vaio includes an internal fan and heatsink to help cool the sensitive electronics as they generate heat and prevent overheating. If these two cooling devices become clogged with dust and hair, they are unable to move the heat thoroughly as it builds inside your laptop.

    Design Factor

    • In addition to typical dirt buildup, your Vaio's slim design may offer a hindrance to its ability to cool itself properly. Marketed as an “ultraportable” laptop, the Vaio TT offers high-performance components within a thin, light case. The faster and more powerful the component, the more heat it produces. The thinner the laptop case, the less air flow there is around these tightly packed components, which leads to quick heat buildup.

    Solution

    • Although the laptop's design is something you cannot change, you can alter your use of the Vaio TT and minimize the damage caused by heat build-up. Help keep your processor from overworking by closing any open programs or running processes that you are not actively using. Prop your laptop up slightly to allow maximum air flow around and through the air vents, and use a laptop cooler to assist with air movement. Do not use your laptop in hot environments that could add to the heat it already produces and cause overheating issues.
