Decoupage Ideas for Plates

Decoupage can transform plates into works of art.

People who like doing crafts are always looking for ways to change, update and improve ordinary things into something beautiful. Decoupaged plates can be given as gifts to remember a birthday, celebrate a new home or thank a friend for helping you redecorate. Decoupage your old dinnerware into wall art for your dining room or kitchen. With some Mod Podge, a foam brush, and a few crafty ideas, you can transform a plain glass plate into a beautiful creation.

Food

Cut pictures of colorful, natural foods out of magazines or cookbooks. Bunches of grapes, oranges, broccoli, and bell peppers are some foods that can be used. Decoupage a few large pictures on the plate. You can also use food pictures to create a collage that covers the entire plate. Use seasonal foods, such as gourds and pumpkins in the fall or watermelon in the summer, for seasonal home decorations.

Wallpaper

Patterned wallpaper can make an interesting decoupage material. Use leftover wallpaper to create decoupage plates that match your home decor. Cut the wallpaper to fit the full plate for full coverage. Cut the wallpaper into shapes, such as circles and squares, to scatter on the plate for a different look. You can hang your wallpaper decoupaged plate on a solid painted wall as artwork.

Gift Wrap Christmas Candy Plates

You can use decoupage to make Christmas candy plates. Cut leftover Christmas gift wrap to fit your plate and decoupage it to the plate. You can also use Christmas-themed magazine pictures for your holiday plate. If you plan to use your plate for candy or other food, use a clear glass plate and only decoupage the underside of it. A plate that's only going to be used for decoration can be decoupaged on the top.

Recycled Magazine Pages

Use old magazine pages to create a colorful design on a plate. Cut magazine pages into 1-inch-by-4-inch strips and put them in a pile. Decoupage the strips to the plate in a chevron, at a diagonal or woven together. The completed plate will have a colorful mosaic look to it. You can change the dimensions of your magazine strips depending on the look you want to create and the size of your plate.

Postcards

Postcards are known for being picturesque. Use postcards to create a landscape-themed decoupaged plate. Use a single postcard picture centered on the plate, or several postcards scattered across the plate. You can also cut out elements from postcard pictures, such as lighthouses or ships, for your plate. Souvenir postcards from a trip decoupaged onto a plate make a unique gift for a loved one.
