Wooden Shapes
-
Pre-cut wooden lady bug shaped can be ordered from online stores or purchased at some hobby supply stores. One alternative is to purchase two round birch wood panels, with one about 25 percent smaller than the other. These can be overlapped about a half inch, and attached with wood glue. The smaller circle should be painted black for the head, with the larger circle painted as the body. The shape could also be cut or carved from wood in a home workshop.
Plaster of Paris
-
Flexible molds of many different sizes and shapes are available at many craft and hobby supply stores. Plaster powder is mixed with water, and poured into the mold to form to the shape. Once cured, the plaster is removed from the mold and can be painted with any type of water-based paint. Plaster of Paris is widely available at all art, hobby, craft and home improvement supply stores. It is also available at some large chain retailers.

Clay
-
Carving a ladybug clock base out of clay gives you the most freedom of form and the most creativity for creating the clock. Be sure to read all packaging instructions on your clay to understand how to best use the product. Some clay will air dry over night, while others must be heated in order to cure and harden the material. The ladybug can be sculpted from colored clay, or painted.
Clock Mechanism
-
Clock mechanisms are typically packaged as two parts, the hands and face, and the mechanism. The two pieces are attached through a hole in the base, and screw together with the hands on the front and the mechanism on the back. A hole can be drilled in the base using a drill. Make sure to use the bit that is recommended for the base's material, and the size that is appropriate for your mechanism. Drill the hole as close to the center of the body of the lady bug as possible to allow space for the hands to rotate. Clock mechanisms are sold at many craft and hobby supply stores, and can be purchased from numerous online retailers.
