Decorating Envelopes for Birthdays

Decorating the envelopes for birthday invitations is yet another crafty way that you can display the festivity of the birthday celebration. A decorated envelope gives invitees something appealing to look at before they even get to the invitation inside. It also allows the crafter to set the tone for the party, and the invitation, from the outside. If you're decorating the envelopes for birthday invitations, keep the theme consistent.

  1. Damask Tape

    • Damask tape is decorative tape that offers a vintage pattern and can be used to dress up paper crafts. Purchase spools of damask tape in a color that coordinates with the color scheme of the birthday invitations. To decorate the envelope, place a strip of the damask tape running lengthwise on the front of the envelope or make the strip run from the top to the bottom along the side of the envelope. Cut damask tape into shapes and tape them onto the envelope.

    Sponge Painting

    • Give a birthday envelope some texture by sponge painting over it. Sponge painting consists of dipping a sponge into tempera paint and gently dabbing the sponge on top of the envelope so that the paint produces a soft painted color. Once the paint is dry, embellish the envelope by cutting out pieces of craft foam shaped like balloons, a birthday cake or wrapped presents and glue them onto the front or back sides of the envelope. The additional layer gives the envelope dimension besides just the paint. If the birthday has a theme, such as princesses, make princess-themed images out of the craft foam to glue over the sponge paint.

    Decoupage

    • To give birthday envelopes an antique look, consider a decoupage project. Decoupage is a craft where paper, images, pressed leaves or flowers are painted onto another surface with a special decoupage paper and paint so that the material being painted on becomes one with the other surface. Decoupage pressed flowers or even pictures of the birthday person onto the birthday envelope. Get the back of the item to stick onto the envelope and apply decoupage glue over the item until it's completely glued down. Remove excess glue so that the envelope doesn't stick to other envelopes in the mail.

    Borders

    • Create a decorative border around the envelope with paper trim or lace doilies. You can even use fabric to create a border if, for instance, you're hosting a sewing themed birthday party. The border must be glued down to the edges of the envelope, but shouldn't interfere with the stamp or the return address. Keep in mind that heavy border materials, such as card stock, will weigh down the envelope and you may need to use extra stamps to mail it.
