Create beautiful designs with melted crayons.

Crayons are made largely of wax and are primarily used to color pictures or drawings. Recycle your old crayons by turning them into works of art with which to decorate your home. You can also design your own shaped crayons by baking together all the small pieces and stubs from a well-used box of crayons.

  1. Stained Glass Designs

    • To make inexpensive stained glass designs to hang in your home, you need black construction paper, waxed paper, glue and an iron. Shave some crayons in several onto a piece of waxed paper. Add another layer of waxed paper on top of the shavings. Use an iron to melt the crayons in the waxed paper. Position two pieces of construction paper together and cut shapes out of the middle, such as a leaf, heart or holiday shape. Place the melted crayons, still in the waxed paper, between the two pieces of construction paper and glue the assembly into place. Your melted crayon colors will show through your cutout in the black paper, looking like a stained glass window.

    Shaped Crayons

    • Create uniquely shaped crayons by recycling the stubs and small pieces of crayons that are too small to use. Heat your oven to 200 degrees. Lay a piece of aluminum foil over a cookie sheet. Press metal cookie cutters into the foil so they'll stay in place. Put small pieces of unwrapped crayons into each cookie cutter. Sprinkle some glitter in with the crayon pieces to make them sparkle. Bake the crayons for about 10 minutes to melt them into the shape of the cookie cutters. Let them cool for about an hour before using.

    Candles

    • Use crayons to color or decorate wax candles. Melt your old, broken or small stubs of unwrapped crayons in the microwave until they turn liquid. Dip the candles into the crayon liquid and let it run over the candles. Use tongs to hold the candle, to prevent burns. This idea works well for white or plain-colored candles. Use different color combinations to enhance the look of your plain candles for display.

    Sandpaper Drawings

    • Color with crayons on a coarse piece of sandpaper. Draw a scene or just use random colors in a pattern or design. The coarser the sandpaper, the better. Bake the sandpaper on a cookie sheet in the oven on a low setting for a few minutes to melt the crayon into the sandpaper. This creates a unusual type of crayon art to display in a frame. It works well for children's craft projects.
