Do crafts and activities to reinforce your child's knowledge of the letter W.

When teaching children their letters, focusing on one letter at a time is an effective approach. You can reinforce their knowledge of the letter by doing activities and crafts with things that begin with that letter. When teaching the letter W, you can focus on whales, wind, watermelons and weather.

  1. Paper Bag Whale

    • Crumple several pieces of newspaper and place them in a paper lunch bag. Fasten the end with a rubber band. Allow the child to decorate the bag as he wishes, using paint or markers. You can also provide pieces of tissue paper, glitter and yarn, if the child wants to be more creative. Glue googly eyes to each side of the whale's head (the side with the newspaper in it is the head). Draw a spout on its back and a smile underneath the eyes.

    Wind Stick

    • Allow the child to decorate an empty tube from a paper towel roll. The child can use paint, markers, crayons, stickers or other art items. Cut strips of brightly colored tissue paper in varying lengths. Have the child glue the strips to the end of the paper towel tube. If she wishes, she can glue strips to both ends. On a windy day, take the stick outside and allow the child to observe the effect of the wind on the tissue paper.

    Paper Watermelon

    • Draw half-circles on pink and green construction paper. The green half-circle should be an inch larger than the pink one. Cut out the half-circles. Allow the child to glue the pink half-circle to the green half-circle to create a watermelon. Punch holes out of a black sheet of construction paper and have the child glue the punched-out pieces to the watermelon as seeds.

    Weather Window

    • Cut curtain shapes out of a piece of construction paper. Have the child glue the curtain shapes to the sides of a white piece of paper. Encourage the child to draw symbols of different types of weather (a sunshine for sunny weather, a rain cloud and lightning for rainy weather, a cloud for cloudy weather, and a snowflake for snowy weather) on blue paper. Cut out the pictures and have the child glue them between the curtains on the white paper.
