LinkedIn's InMail service alerts you of a message's status via the Sent folder.

The LinkedIn status “In Progress” means the InMail message you have sent to a LinkedIn member has not been opened or read. The message is sitting in the member’s Inbox. A copy of the message also appears in your “Sent” folder within your Inbox. The wording “In Progress” appears within parentheses to the right of the person’s name. If the message is urgent, you may want to contact the LinkedIn member using another means of communication.

  1. Status Change

    • Once the LinkedIn member opens the message, the status changes from “In Progress” to “Accepted,” indicating it was opened. If the member replies to the message, the status changes to “Replied.” Click the “Sent” link within you Inbox to view messages you have sent to others, as well as message statuses.

    InMail Message Period

    • The message recipient has seven days to open your InMail message and reply to it. If the member fails to reply within that time period, the InMail message is credited back to your LinkedIn account on the eighth day. The total amount of InMail messages you can send per month vary by membership level. InMail messages are $10 per message, if you have a free account, as of the time of publication. Depending on your membership level, you can send up to three messages if you have a Business account; 10 messages if you have a Business Plus account or 25 messages if you have an Executive account, without having to pay the fee, as of the time of publication. So if a message is credited back to your account, the message will be a credit if you have a free account or will not be deducted from the total number of messages you can send from your Business, Business Plus or Executive account.

    Replying After Message Period

    • If the LinkedIn member replies after the InMail message has been credited to your account, LinkedIn will not deduct the message from your account. In this case, the message the member replied to is free. You are free to send the credited InMail message to any LinkedIn member you want -- it is like other available messages within your account.

    Deleting Messages

    • Click the “Sent” link in your Inbox and click the check box(es) next to the message(s) you delete. Click the “Delete” button to delete the message(s). The deleted message(s) are moved to the “Trash” folder. Click the “Trash” link; click the check box(es) next to the message(s) you want to remove from the Trash folder. Click the “Empty Trash” button to delete the message(s) or click the “Delete Permanently” button to remove the message(s) from the LinkedIn server.
