Handprints can be used to make a variety of different craft projects.

Celebrating holidays in the classroom provides an excellent opportunity to let the students use their imagination to make crafts and decorations relating to the holiday. One basic craft project is handprint art. Children can form images with their handprints and decorate them as they see fit. Handprint art also has a level of personalization not found in some other art forms, as the students use their own hands as the basis for their art.

  1. Reindeer Puppet

    • For the reindeer puppet you will need small paper bags, brown construction paper and markers. Have the children trace both hands onto a piece of brown construction paper. Cut out the two handprints and glue or tape them to the bottom of the paper bag on the opposite side from the crease to form antlers. Then have the children use markers to draw in the eyes, nose and mouth of the reindeer on the folded-over bottom of the bag.

    Construction Paper Rudolph

    • Have students trace one hand on a piece of brown construction paper. Cut out the hand shape. The four fingers will form the legs, and the thumb will be the head. Use markers to decorate the deer by adding a nose, mouth and eyes. Use 2-inch sections of pipe cleaners to make antlers. Attach them with glue to the thumb-head. Use red sequins to create a sparkly nose. Have the students give Rudolph some accessories, such as a collar or blanket, using the markers, sequins or glitter.

    Two-Hand Rudolph

    • Have the students use both hands to create a tempera-paint Rudolph. Paint their palms brown and four fingers black. Do not paint the thumb. Have the students press one hand on the paper with the fingers pointing up and to the side. Remove the hand and press the other hand with the palm print overlapping and the fingers pointing up in the opposite direction. The palms will make the face and the fingers will make the antlers. Then paint in the eyes, nose and mouth to finish the head.

    One-Hand Rudolph

    • Paint the student's palm brown and his four fingers black. Have the student press his hand on the paper with his four fingers forming a "V" shape. The palm will make up the face of the reindeer, and the antlers will be formed by the four fingers, two on each side. Use paints and glitter, sequins or pieces of felt to decorate the deer and draw the nose, eyes and mouth.
