3 Ways to Change Behavior
You are the sum of your past behavior, whether good or bad. The habits you have developed over a lifetime affect your personal relationships, your overall health and your successes in business and in life. If you are dissatisfied in any area of your life, the good news is you have the power within you to create more successful habits. Changing your behavior gives you the power to change how you think.
-
Determine
-
Within your mind you have the power to envision your future. To achieve anything in life you must first decide change is possible. If you do not believe that you are capable of change, you will fizzle out of enthusiasm and find excuses to fail. Instead of being hopeful, be determined. Write down your goals so you can remind yourself what you've decided to change, and visualize yourself having accomplished your goal.
Take Action
-
You cannot just wish yourself into success. Excellence isn't an accident, it is a series of deliberate actions and their outcomes. These actions will help redefine how you think, which is the essence of behavioral change. Pay attention to detail. Consider all the small changes stair steps toward a larger reward, but keep them simple and don't attempt too many changes at once. Also recognize any of those triggers that would derail you from your new habits.
-
Be Consistent
-
Like anyone on the cusp of change, persistence is key. You cannot implement a few successful habits and expect a miraculous turnaround in your behavior overnight, or even in a matter of days or weeks. You must continue the new habits until they are a part of your natural routine. Be conscious of your actions, and be prepared that the more compromised you are emotionally or physically the easier it will be to backslide.
Attitude is Everything
-
While the steps to change your behavior come from the actions you take, your overall attitude affects these actions. Your behavior is directly tied to how positive or negative your attitude may be, which stems from the strength or weaknesses in your self-esteem.Celebrate the little accomplishes on the way from point A to point B, so you will give your attitude a strong foundation to use as your impetus to continually evolve and improve.
