Ways to Show Kindness
The universe reciprocates the attitude and behavior you send out into it. This is the fundamental truth behind concepts like the Golden Rule, which says that you should treat others as you would like them to treat you. It isn't always easy to send kindness into the world when the world itself can be unkind, but sometimes simply choosing to be kind puts the power back in your hands to change your circumstances and your world.

Open Yourself Up to Others
-
Sometimes a simple smile can brighten the lives of others. This welcoming sign can make others feel more comfortable and accepted in your presence. If you are particularly daring, you can do as Juan Mann did in Australia when he launched his "Free Hugs" campaign. He wore a sign that offered his services and stood on a busy pedestrian street in Sydney, hoping to connect to a disconnected world. It took a bit to warm up to the idea of hugging a stranger, but soon the "Free Hugs" campaign became a worldwide phenomenon.
Guard Your Words
-
Despite what you have been told about sticks and stones, words do affect others' lives. You can either wield the power of your tongue like a weapon or demonstrate random acts of kindness. Be polite. Say "please" and "thank you." Never withhold an apology if you have made a mistake, and always offer a compliment more readily than a criticism. You never know when a random kind word can make someone's day.

Empathize, Don't Criticize
-
An old saying suggests you can never understand another until you've walked a mile in his shoes. Whereas condemnation robs another of his humanity and makes it easier to be angry at him, dislike him or even hate him, empathy reminds you to be grateful of your own circumstances. Listen to another person's problems and experiences before you judge. You might find you won't want to judge him at all.
Learn to Serve
-
Find a way to help your fellow human beings in ways big or small. If another person is short some change in the grocery line, offer to pay the difference. If someone is struggling to open a door with her hands full, hold the door open for her. Instead of cursing someone for cutting you off in traffic, allow someone in line ahead of you. Instead of complaining about problems, find a way to be a part of the solution.
