Give your baby her own cake so she can be as messy as she likes.

A child's first birthday party is a major milestone for both baby and parents. After nurturing and caring for a baby before birth and an additional 12 months, it's time to celebrate. A key component to a one-year-old's birthday party is food. Make sure you have enough food and the correct food for all guests attending. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Baby Food

    • While some of the children attending your child's first birthday may be toddlers, ensure you have food for the babies. Set out boxes of rice, oatmeal and mixed grain baby cereal, along with baby bowls and spoons. Add a variety of different stages of baby food-filled jars such as apples, peaches, peas, carrots and bananas. Consider asking guests with babies what stage food their child eats and if there are any flavors you should avoid. Send the remaining unopened jars of baby food and cereal home with guests.

    Food for Parents

    • The majority of the guests at your baby's party may be adult family members and friends, as well as older children. In general, the food you serve should match the party theme. For example, if you are having a carnival-themed party, offer guests corn dogs, fruit kabobs, soft pretzels with cheese and cotton candy. Parties with farm themes could offer barbecue ribs and hamburgers, corn on the cob and apple pie in a jar.

    Finger Food

    • Prepare food especially for toddlers by slicing and dicing it into bite-size pieces. Food should be no larger than a pea to avoid being a choking hazard for small children. Offer children lightly seasoned chicken and fresh sliced grilled pineapple. Let kids snack on dry cereal, mandarin orange pieces, frozen yogurt and sweet potato fries.

    Desserts

    • It's traditional to have cake at a birthday party, but there are several alternatives you can serve. Bake chocolate chip or sugar cookies and stack them into a pyramid shape for a birthday dessert. Decorate one of the cookies especially for the birthday child. Use colored icing to draw a face on it or write the number one in a bold color.

Make a trifle by cubing pound cake and layering it in a glass container with vanilla or butterscotch pudding and fresh fruit. Put the cake in the dish, add a layer of pudding and top it with a layer of bananas. Repeat the layering order until you reach the top of the bowl, and finish with whipped cream. Organize bananas into the shape of a "1" to complete the dessert.
