A printer configuration file format uses the GPD file extension.

GPD is a file extension attached to five different file types. Each file type is opened by a different application. To open a GPD file, the user needs to find out which application generated the file. The GPD files created by these different applications are not compatible. It is not possible to open a GPD file create for one application in one of the other applications using the file extension.

  1. AutoCAD Civil

    • One file type carrying the GPD file extension is a file meant for use with the AutoCAD Civil Computer-Aided Design package, produced by Autodesk. The format of the AutoCAD GDP file is binary. It is a graphics file containing TR-55 storm run-off information. “TR” stands for “Technical Release” and is a civil engineering standard for measuring potential storm drain-capacity requirements.

    Generic Printer Description

    • Microsoft uses the GPD file extension for a printer driver configuration file. This is a plain text file containing information about printer capabilities. The file can be opened with the Microsoft Universal Printer Driver program.

    Xbox 360

    • The Xbox 360 stores a file with the GPD file extension as part as a player's profile. The file contains player achievements, such as scores attained in previous plays of a game. The GPD abbreviation stands for "Game Play Data."

    PhotoDefiner

    • The PhotoDefiner application from RGB Light also opens its own format of GPD file. This file is a raster image file, which is compressed. A raster image is stored as a grid of pixels.

    Visual EPR

    • Visual EPR is a program used by physics researchers to analyze the physical properties of crystals. One program contributing to the application is PARAMS. This enables data to be viewed and adjusted. The data input file for the PARAMS program has the GDP file extension.

    Compatibility

    • The five programs using the GDP file type have nothing in common. The files that each program expects are of a different format; each application is programmed to process particular data layouts. The compressed image map contained in a PhotoDefiner GPD file would be of no use to the PARAMS program of Visual EPR. The Xbox 360 and Generic Printer Description GPD files are both in a plain text format, but neither is organized to give the correct queues needed by the other program. The Xbox 360 could not read a printer configuration file.
