Elementary Door Decoration Ideas for Christmas

To celebrate the Christmas season, it's a common practice for some elementary schools to decorate the classroom doors. The door decorations reflect the holiday spirit and the creativity of the children. Harness the artistic abilities of the children to decorate the classroom door for Christmas. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Photo Holly Door

    • Have children color and cut out one holly leaf shape each. Take a picture of each child. Print out the pictures and cut each photo into a round shape. Tape the photographs to round, red pieces of construction paper to resemble holly berries. Tape the red holly berry picture to the holly leaf the child decorated. Attach all of the holly leaves to the door of the room. Use cutout letters taped to the door to form the words, "Happy 'Hollydays' From Our Class."

    Christmas Wish Wreath

    • Make a wreath of bows to attach to the classroom door. Have each student in the class write their personal Christmas wish on a 12-inch piece of red or green ribbon. Tie the ribbons into bows and tape them to the classroom door in a round, wreath shape. Put a sign on the door that reads, "Our Christmas Wishes."

    Classroom Christmas Tree

    • Draw a Christmas tree outline on a large piece of butcher paper and color it green. Cut it out and tape it to the door. Provide each student with a snack-sized paper plate, colored markers, glitter, glue, ribbons and stickers. Encourage the students to decorate their plates to make their own Christmas ornaments. Glue a loop of ribbon to the top of each plate. Tape the ornaments to the paper Christmas tree on the door. Remove the ornaments just before students leave for Christmas break so they can hang them on their trees at home.

Christmas Cards From Around the World

    • For older elementary school students, combine a research project with door-decorating. Have each child choose a country. The child then reads about how people in that country celebrate Christmas. He makes a Christmas card showing a picture relating to one of the traditions. For instance, if a child chooses Mexico, the front of the card would say "Feliz Navidad" and show children breaking a pinata or a family making Christmas tamales. Alternatively, choose one country for the entire class to use as a model. Tape the back of the cards to the door of your classroom so the front and inside of the cards can be seen.
