What Is a Lame Encoder?
A LAME encoder is a piece of computer software used to create MP3 audio files. Audio encoders take sound files that are in another format and manipulate them to create a different type of file. LAME is one of several types of MP3 encoders, and is the basis for many audio conversion programs.

Background
-
LAME, standing for "Lame Ain't an MP3 Encoder," due to the initial software not being able to yet encode files, is an open source project, meaning the source code is available for free and can be altered by any programmer. The technology is continually improved upon and manipulated by a variety of developers. LAME was originally designed in 1998 as an attempt to improve psycho-acoustics, encoding speeds and noise shaping, compared to other audio encoders at the time, according to MP3-Converter.
Features
-
LAME's native features include the ability to encode MP3 files in various bitrates and compatibility with multiple operating systems. The source code is not affiliated with the original International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, patent for MP3 encoding technology. This is what allows LAME to be distributed for free, without necessitating that royalties be paid to any third party. LAME is therefore is used as the basis, or included in, many different programs.

Encoders
-
Programs that use the LAME encoder use a compression and decompression algorithm to take an original audio file and convert it to the MP3 format. Often this is done for a user of the software simply by selecting a file, choosing the desired output file type and clicking "Start." The types of files that the LAME encoder can covert vary depending on the program, as does the types of MP3 files it can covert to. The specifics of what a LAME encoder can accomplish are unique to each program that uses it, as the developers have the ability to make adjustments to the software.
Software
-
Free software that incorporates LAME into its framework include, Audacity, getID3() and VideoLAN products. While LAME's source code is available for free, many programs that use it are not. Easy CD-DA Extractor, dBpoweramp and Blaze Media Pro are examples of commercial software that uses LAME.
