Facebook often updates the way its features function, which can cause some confusion to users who were not aware of the change. In mid-2011, the site removed the "Link" button that was once located just above the wall of each user. Luckily, links can still be added to profiles -- the process has just changed a bit.

  1. Profile Update

    • In August 2011, Facebook revealed a profile update that removed the "Link" icon from the top of users' walls. From time to time, the social networking site updates the format of users' profiles, and this update changed the way that links are added to profiles. While in the past, a written post and link had two separate fields, the new update allows both posts and links to be shared from the same field.

    Reversal

    • Once Facebook updates user profiles, there is no way to go back to the old profile format. Unfortunately, if you are unhappy with the new functions of your Facebook profile, the only recourse is to use the "Help Center" to send feedback about your dissatisfaction. You must add links via the new method, unless the powers that be elect to add the "Link" button back to profiles.

    Adding Links

    • Add links to your profile, or the profile of a friend, in the new profile format by clicking inside the field beneath the "Update Status" option at the top of the profile. Just like with the old profile format, links may be manually typed or copied and pasted from their original location. After you add the link, click the blue "Post" button. In some cases, Facebook will provide thumbnail image options; use the arrows next to "Choose a thumbnail" to select the one you want. Click "Post" again to add the link to the profile wall.

    Privacy

    • The new profile format allows you to set the privacy for each link individually, something that was not possible before. After you add your link to the "Update Status" field, use the button immediately to the left of the "Post" button to choose who can see the link. Note that you can only choose the privacy for a link added to your own wall -- if you add a link to a friend's wall, she is the one who can choose who sees it.
