Once your JPG is in the right format you can easily upload it to YouTube.

While browsing YouTube, you may have seen someone else's still photos displayed on his channel and wondered how he got them there, since YouTube is supposed to be just a video sharing site. You've seen it done, so you know it's possible, but to do it you need to make a video containing still images, tricking YouTube in a way.

  1. Supported Files

    • The supported file formats for uploading content to YouTube are all video formats such as MPEG, FLV, AVI, WMV and MOV, not image formats such as JPG. As such, YouTube doesn't allow you to upload a JPG directly to the site as-is. If you try to upload a JPG, YouTube warns you that the file format may be incompatible and the upload won't finish processing.

    What You Can Do

    • If you have a JPG image that you really want to share on YouTube, one way to make it happen is to put your image into a video file format. Since most video editing programs allow you to insert images into videos, you could create a video project and insert the JPG into it. Some video editing programs even allow you to pan and zoom on the image, thereby making the image look as if it's moving.

    How to Do It

    • Many computers come with either Windows Movie Maker or Apple's iMovie already installed as part of the package. Open the program, start a new file and then click "File" and "Insert Image" or "Import" or a similar function to insert the photo into your video's time line. If you're unfamiliar with video editing programs, take some time doing any available tutorials before you begin so you know what the possibilities are for adding effects such as pan and zoom to your video.

    After the Video Is Made

    • Once you've placed your JPG image into a video time line, the next step is saving the video in a format that YouTube will recognize. To do this, you must export your video. Click "File," then "Export" and save the movie as a WMV, MOV, MPEG-4 or another format that YouTube supports. If you're using a native tool such as Movie Maker or iMovie, the export settings should be set to create a movie that will be recognized by YouTube. If not, choose a file type in your export settings that saves your video as a WMV, MOV or MPEG-4 file. One of these should be among the file type choices you have in your program's export window, but if not, check YouTube's Supported File Type page for a list of all possible file types you can save the video as. Once your video is exported, you can upload it the same way you would import any other video on YouTube.
