A good patio umbrella provides protection from the sun for your table while you dine outdoors, either alone or with friends. The right measurements ensure that your umbrella is wide enough without becoming top heavy and tilting over. Height

When measuring a patio umbrella’s height, you should measure the distance from the base of the umbrella to the umbrella’s crank. This is helpful if you plan to use the umbrella on a shorter table than normal.
Rib Width

The most accurate way to determine the size of an umbrella is the distance from the end of one of the umbrella’s support rib to the center of the pole. You can multiply this distance by two to obtain the correct size. Be aware that the exact measurements will vary according to the specifications of the manufacturer.

The full width of the umbrella is measured when it is open to its fullest. The optimum width of your umbrella is approximately 5 feet wider than your table.

Always close the umbrella if the wind picks up or if high winds are in the forecast. High winds can turn the umbrella into a projectile and cause serious damage. Use a dust cover when the umbrella is not in use to keep dust from being dispersed when you reopen it. This collection of dust can get in your food or make you ill.
