Description of the WordPress NextGen Gallery

The NextGen Gallery is a free WordPress plugin that takes the place of the default gallery and image handling features included in the script. This plugin expands the image related features that WordPress has to offer, adding in AJAX thumbnail generation, Javascript effects, custom gallery templates and many other options.

  1. Installation

    • The NextGen Gallery plugin follows the same installation procedure as most WordPress plugins. The NextGen Gallery folder gets uploaded to your "wp-content/plugins" folder and activated through the WordPress backend. NextGen Gallery uses a post tag to display the galleries within your blog post. The codes "[nggallery id=x]" and "[slideshow id=x]" display NextGen galleries on WordPress.

    Features

    • NextGen Gallery replaces and adds to the WordPress image features. Some of the most notable NextGen Gallery features include creating slideshows on the fly, random image display, picture zip uploads, photo widget for your theme's sidebar and CSS file sheets. You can also add Javascript to the galleries, creating lightbox style galleries and other popular Javascript functions.

    Album Management

    • NextGen Gallery also adds album management features to WordPress. You can create custom albums as well as moving images directly between different albums. The photo's EXIF data can be pulled and stored through the plugin. You also have the option of tagging your images and displaying the resulting tag cloud on your theme, such as in your sidebar or another location.

    Considerations

    • WordPress offers many basic image features, so NextGen Gallery may be overwhelming if you only post the occasional image. This plugin provides many useful features for bloggers who photoblog or use lots of pictures in their posts. The AJAX, Javascript and custom CSS options provide greater customization than the default WordPress galleries.
