Recommended Propane Stoves for Cabins Without Electricity

Linda Woolhether

Individuals living in cabins without electricity must rely on alternative fuel sources for cooking purposes. A propane stove requires the use of a canister or tank and can provide a simple optional method of preparing food in the absence of electricity. It makes sense to keep in mind. While propane stoves are portable, easy to use and certified for outdoor use, indoor use is not recommended except under certain conditions and only then with safety precautions in place.

Outside Tanks

Indoor use is not recommended for propane camping stoves.

A propane canister should not be used indoors as it poses a safety threat. It is never safe to use a propane stove indoors if it is attached to a canister because of fire danger. There is no safety device attached to the appliance to shut off the gas in the event of an emergency and a fire could result. The safest way to use a propane stove indoors is to have it attached to an outside tank through the use of a hose or pipe. Portable propane canisters should always be stored outdoors and never used inside. Propane is highly flammable and must not be kept close to a heat source because of the danger of explosion.

Vented Stoves

The American Medical Association reports that approximately 2,100 unintentional deaths occur in the United States each year due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide can build up in an unvented area through the use of propane stoves. Since propane is colorless and odorless it is difficult to detect without a CO monitor. If a propane stove is used indoors, it must be vented with a range vent or must be used next to an open window to allow flow of fresh air. Coleman, the maker of camping stoves, recommends that all propane stoves be used in a vented area if they must be used inside.

Patio or Balcony Use

Because of the danger from toxic fumes and the possibility of explosion from the use of propane camping stoves indoors, it is best to use and store propane stoves outdoors only. A propane stove can safely be used on a patio or balcony of a cabin and can provide a viable alternative for cooking. Portable camping stoves are lightweight and versatile. They are usually attached to a propane canister and should be handled carefully at all times. Caution should be taken when moving from place-to-place not to drop or shake the bottle as it can explode. The canister should be the appropriate size for the stove to eliminate the possibility of a leak. If a propane stove is used anywhere indoors, which is not advised, it must be in an area that is away from other heat sources and well vented.
