Air Force Firefighter Salary
Air Force firefighters are enlisted airmen whose main objective is to extinguish fires in the event of an emergency wherever U.S. troops are stationed or deployed. Air Force firefighters also provide emergency medical care and make sure that safety procedures and environmental readiness operations are maintained. Those who are stationed on American soil also occasionally assist with civilian emergencies such as wildfires. There are no special pay scales specifically for Air Force firefighters: they receive the same base pay as other airmen based on years of service and rank.

Base Salary

All airmen enter the Air Force with the rank of E-1, or airman basic. Air Force firefighters are considered enlisted men with the rank of E-1 upon entering the service, and receive a base pay of $17,604 per year. This rate equates to an hourly wage of $8.46 across a standard 40-hour work week. While all Air Force firefighters start at this pay rate, their wages, like other members of the Air Force, increase with promotions in rank and time served.

Like all enlisted airmen, Air Force firefighters receive allowances for basic needs as well for hardships. Each enlisted Air Force service member is granted a clothing allowance of $1,406 per year. Airmen forced to serve in arduous quality-of-life locations are granted a hardship duty pay of between $50.00 and $150.00 per month. Like all enlisted airmen, Air Force firefighters who serve in conditions of wartime or under the constant threat of civilian insurrection or enemy attack are granted a monthly imminent danger pay (IDP) allowance of $225 per month.

All enlisted airmen including Air Force firefighters receive comprehensive medical and dental care. Families of enlisted airmen are also covered by the Air Force health plan and can receive care at military and civilian facilities. The Air Force also offers enlisted members the option to purchase life insurance plans of up to $400,000. The Air Force also offers enlistment bonuses of up to $17,000.

Air Force firefighter applicants are evaluated according to the same standard requirements used for all E-1 candidates. Applicants must be between 18 and 27 years of age and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. They must also posses a high school diploma or general education diploma coupled with 15 college credits. Firefighter applicants in particular should have an interest in math, science and chemistry. Strong teamwork and analytical problem-solving skills are also highly desired.
