Trusting in God Sunday School Activities
Trust in God lies at the center of the believer’s faith. The Bible contains many Scriptures that encourage the believer to put her trust in God, such as Psalm 118:8 (“It is better to trust in the Lord…”) and Proverbs 3:5-6 (“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…”). It also contains many stories that demonstrate God’s faithfulness. Sunday school teachers use activities to reinforce the student’s ability to trust in God.

God, My Refuge and Fortress
-
Psalm 91:1-16, called the Christian 911, begins with “Those who go to God Most High for safety will be protected by the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, "’You are my place of safety and protection. You are my God and I trust you.’” Have third- and fourth-graders take a picture of a strong castle and glue it on a piece of paper. Add a picture of a bird over the castle to represents God’s protection in verse four. Write “I fear nothing because I trust God” with the reference Psalm 91. Alternatively, give the students a large shield shape to decorate. Have them write “Your truth and faithfulness are my shield and buckler. I am not afraid. Psalm 91:4-5.”
God Defeats the Enemy
-
Read 2 Chronicles 20:1-30 to elementary students. Have them consider how frightened the people were to know that their enemies were coming. Have the students get up and make a trip to the Wilderness of Tekoa, singing and dancing as Jehoshaphat commanded, while their enemies attacked each other. Command them to take the spoil of clothing, food and expensive items you have spread for them, as the people of Judah did. Alternatively, give them a small box with several acrylic gemstones, Psalm 60:12 (“we can win with God's help. He will defeat our enemies”), pictures of food and scraps of cloth to remind them how God won the battle. Allow them to decorate the box.

The Sacrificial Lamb
-
Tell the story of how God provided a sacrifice for Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22:1-14. Discuss how God had promised to bless Abraham with a son and now he was asking Abraham to kill his son. Talk about Abraham’s great faith in telling his servants he and Isaac would return and in telling Isaac that God would provide a sacrifice. Have the elementary students glue pebbles together to make a small altar or form an altar out of clay. Place small twigs on the altar and a picture of a ram with horns to represent the sacrifice God provided.
Hall of Faith
-
Hebrews 11:1-40 contains the Hall of Faith, individuals in the Bible who trusted God and received a reward. Have each fifth and sixth grade student choose a character and read the Old Testament story that tells the story. Let each one present a class report and follow with a discussion about how they can live a faithful life. Alternatively, portray a television reporter interviewing each character about his faith experience.
