Database administrators are computer professionals who focus on the best methods of storing, using and presenting information contained in a database. They may work with users to identify their needs, supervise the transfer of files from a previous system or test new applications. A database administrator, or DBA, may design the structure of the database, or he may assign the task to a database analyst or designer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects and salaries for DBAs are excellent.

    • The BLS reported that the average annual salary for a database administrator was $75,730, as of May 2010. The most highly compensated 10 percent earned $115,660 or more per year, while the lowest-paid 10 percent earned $41,570 or less.

    States With Highest Average Salaries

    • According to data published by the BLS for May 2010, database administrators earned an average of $84,090 annually in California. The mean salary in New Jersey was $82,750 per year, and it was $82,110 in Washington. Delaware and Virginia rounded out the list of the five best-paying states, reporting average earnings of $82,020 and $81,720, respectively.

    States With Lowest Average Salaries

    • The lowest average salary, per the May 2010 report from the BLS, was in West Virginia, where database administrators averaged $51,690 per year. Database administrators in Mississippi earned an average annual salary of $52,710, and in Montana, they earned a mean salary of $53,370 per year. The average income for database administrators in North Dakota was $59,560, and it was $60,300 in Oklahoma.

    Metropolitan Areas With Highest Average Salaries

    • The BLS reported that, as of May 2010, the two best-paying metropolitan areas for database administrators were in California. The average annual salary in the greater San Jose area was $93,430, and database administrators in the Los Angeles-Glendale-Long Beach metropolitan area averaged $92,620. The mean salary was $92,600 in the greater Raleigh area of North Carolina, and it was $90,670 in the San Francisco-Redwood City metropolitan area of California. In New Haven, Connecticut, the average annual salary was $87,220.

    Rural Areas With Highest Average Salaries

    • In areas without a metropolitan center, the BLS report for May 2010 showed that database administrators earned the highest average salary, $82,230, in St. Mary's County, Maryland. In Western New Hampshire, the average salary was $80,960, and it was $73,950 in nonmetropolitan Northeastern Virginia. Database administrators averaged $73,610 per year in rural areas in Western Central North Carolina, and they earned a mean salary of $73,500 in the nonmetropolitan areas of South Florida.
