Create a warm, inviting office space in your bedroom.

When you need a home office but live in a home with limited space, finding room to have a dedicated office space can be a challenge. Make a home office in your bedroom by using furniture and creative shelving placement to create a nook or corner in your room dedicated solely to your work. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Office Armoire

    • Use an existing armoire or purchase one to use as a dedicated office space. You'll want to arrange the shelves so you have a dedicated shelf for working, writing and computer use. Organizing overhead shelves will give you optimum storage space. You may want to install small rectangles of pegboard on the inner doors for easy storage of hanging items, such as scissors, crafty notions and keys. Personalize the inside of your armoire by painting it or installing wallpaper to give it a custom look and feel. You have the option to paint the outside or leave it as is to complement your existing decor. Placing plenty of baskets and other storage implements in the armoire will give you plenty of room to store papers, files and other office necessities. Open the armoire doors when necessary, and close them when not in use so your armoire looks like another piece of your bedroom furniture.

    Shelving Wall

    • You can divide your bedroom into two separate spaces by placing a large shelving unit to offset a portion of the room as a dedicated office space. Large shelving units are often available for sale at big box stores and home furniture shops. If you choose this option, bolt the shelving unit to the ceiling and wall to ensure that it stays safely in place and doesn’t tip over. Large shelving units double as storage and as a display unit for your office space.

    Closet Office

    • If you have an unused or little-used closet, you can easily convert it into an office space. You can make the closet cozy and inviting by painting the walls or lining them with wallpaper. A desk against the back wall and shelving above the desk and along the other walls takes advantage of as much overhead space as possible for storage. You can use file cabinets as the base for your desk to provide more storage space if you need it, and you can paint them in vibrant colors with spray paint. If you need more more hanging storage, you install pegboard and hanging storage on the back sides of the closet doors.

    Office Nook

    • You can create an office nook anywhere in your bedroom by placing a desk, a chair and a lamp in a dedicated area and making a cozy space for office work and studying. If you have a window with a picturesque view, make a nook in front of the window by placing a desk in front of the window and coordinating the curtains and a side chair with the same fabric. For a dark corner of the room that needs illumination, place a desk in the corner and lighten it up by installing a small overhead chandelier for both lighting and ambiance.
