Ad sales professionals are paid to create new relationships with advertisers.

Magazines generate revenue from subscriptions, newsstand sales and advertising. To obtain advertisers, magazines, like newspapers, employ salespeople. Some salespeople are inside employees who service various accounts while others work outside the office. Those who work outside make in-person sales calls. Advertising salespeople are typically paid a small salary and commissions.

  1. Inside Sales Jobs

    • Depending on the magazine, some ad salespeople work in the office and make sales over the phone and through email. Inside ad salespeople are often responsible for servicing large house accounts and sell small, specialty ads such as classifieds and personal ads. Most inside salespeople are commonly paid by salary and small commissions. These salespeople are usually employed by bigger magazines where outside salespeople do not have the time or geographic ability to service.

    Outside Sales Jobs

    • Ad salespeople who work outside the office are primarily responsible for bringing in new business. Their duties include cold calling, networking, making in-person sales presentations and hosting special events to secure new relationships. Some outside sales agents are paid a salary, commission or both. Agents with more experience often opt to take bigger commission splits in lieu of being paid a salary or draw against commissions.

    National Salary Averages

    • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were approximately 145,160 advertising salespeople working in the United States as of 2010. Those selling ads work for newspapers, television and radio stations, directory publishers, public relations firms, cable companies, movie theaters and magazines, among others. Those who sell for magazines and related mediums, as of 2010, earned average salaries in the $46,000 to $61,000 range. However, many magazine ad salespeople made significantly more. And it is not unheard of for talented professionals to earn $100,000 or more.

    Top-Paying Markets

    • While the national average salary for magazine ad salespeople is less than $62,000, the median is much higher in major metropolitan markets, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2010. For example, in the metro Chicago market, salespeople earn an average of approximately $72,030. Those in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston averaged $70,850, $69,240, $64,600 and $63,350, respectively.
