Break up large spaces in your home by adding furniture and accessories.

It may be a great room, a multifunction room or just a big open space in your house, but if you don't have it planned correctly, you might have trouble living in it and feeling comfortable. Simple design principles such as arranging furniture, adding accessories and working with color and pattern can add aesthetic value while giving each section of your large room a definite purpose. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Design a Plan

    • Plan your room's design. Figure out what you need to use your room for. Make a rough sketch on a sheet of paper to decide how to divide up the room. Decide on the color scheme, patterns and textures you wish to use. When deciding on a design, remember that darker colors tend to a make a room look smaller, while lighter hues suggest space and openness. Your room will look coordinated with a planned style and scheme in mind.

    Physical Dividers

    • Use furniture to create separate sections in each room. Arrange a sofa in the middle of one area of a room to make a "wall" indicating a physical break from one area to another. Place chairs and tables around the sofa to create a grouping. Place a reversible screen in the room to both divide a space and decorate it. Both sides should have a pattern or artwork that contributes to the decor of your room. Unfold the screen, and set it up where you want to block off an area.

    Use Accessories

    • Use curtains or draperies to indicate a division in a big room. Secure half-drapery rods to walls and hang color-coordinated fabric that matches your room's style on the rods. Swoop the fabric back and secure with hooks or tassels to indicate a visual break in the room. Separate a large room into smaller areas by using rugs, floor mats or tiles. When the furniture is arranged around a rug or floor piece, it indicates a cozy setting and separates it from the rest of the room.

    Use Color

    • While you have a specific color palette in mind for a large room, separating the room by using specific colors in certain areas will break up a large space. For instance, if navy, cream and burgundy are the colors in your scheme, use all three in the room, but choose only one to focus on in each section to create a division. A blue sofa and matching accessories can define one area of a room, a red painted wall and red-toned table can indicate another, while a monotone cream-colored scheme can separate a third area of a room. Incorporate small hints of the other two colors to keep the color scheme vibrant in the entire room.
