Fundraising Ideas for Ballerinas

Custom costumes and sets can be pricey; fundraisers can help.

Ballet, like all performing arts, comes with associated costs -- from class fees and practice-space rental fees to travel costs and choreographer salaries. Whether you are trying to raise money to fund an expanded practice space, up-front production costs for "The Nutcracker" or travel expenses for a ballet exchange program, take typical fundraising strategies and give them a ballet-inspired twirl.

  1. Dance Performance

    • Stage a one-time fundraising performance of a well-known, much-loved ballet, such as "Swan Lake" or "The Nutcracker," and charge an admission fee that is much larger than usual. This fundraising strategy is particularly viable for a group of ballerinas, such as a dance troupe or an entire ballet school. Alternatively, to avoid the time and production costs of staging a full ballet, present a selection of the most spectacular dances from recent productions. Ask the venue to waive or reduce its rental fee as a donation to your cause.

    Ballet Grams

    • Offer traveling "ballet grams" -- mini-performances by a small numbers of ballerinas -- in exchange for generous donations. Larger donations could feature more ballerinas and longer performances. List a selection of pieces from which the donor can choose for each donation level.

    Themed Gala

    • Hold a themed gala evening to make the fundraising event into an extended experience that appeals to a wider audience than just a ballet performance would -- and expand your opportunities to raise money at the same time. Take advantage of other businesses and attractions in your community; for example, hold a gala called "Cupcakes and Swan Lake," with the performance catered by a local baking company. Make the evening more special by holding the performance in an unusual space, like a warehouse or an upscale restaurant, requiring black-tie attire and auctioning off lessons or private performances by members of the company.

    Ballet Marathon

    • Organize a "ballet marathon" or dance-a-thon, in which ballerinas take turns for a total of 24 straight hours of dancing. Have each ballerina solicit sponsors for each minute or hour of dancing. Alternatively, ask sponsors to pledge money based on specific steps or positions, such as arabesques and pirouettes.
