You can protect your WordPress blog from profanity, abusive comments or other keywords of your choosing by using a filter plugin. There are free or commercial products are available, depending upon your needs.

  1. WebPurify Profanity Filter

    • WebPurify's plugin filters user comments before WordPress inserts them in the database. It replaces each letter of the profanity with an asterisk. You can install the plugin directly from the Plugins area of the WordPress administration page. Although WebPurify's plugin is a commercial product, there is a seven-day free trial. To continue to use the plugin or have the ability to create custom whitelists or blacklists, you will need to purchase a license key.

    WP Stop Profanity

    • With WP Stop Profanity, you can select the words that you want blacklisted. This free plugin checks posts or comments and replaces unacceptable words with bullets. You configure the plugin on the settings page found under the Tools menu in the WordPress administration area.

    WP Content Filter

    • Another free plugin that you can use to protect your website from profanity is WP Content Filter. Besides posts and comments, WP Content Filter can also filter words from post titles, comment authors, tags and the tag cloud. Wildcards characters of your choosing replace the profanity. You can also decide if you wish the first and/or last characters of words display or none.

    Interactive Spam Blocker

    • SiteBrains spam blocker is a free WordPress plugin that does more than filter out profanity. It also blocks spam and self-promotion links. You can download and install this plugin from within your WordPress plugins area of the administration page. You configure the rules for the handling of posts and comments. You can block the submission or Spam Blocker can edit it, replacing certain characters within curse words with asterisks.
