Paper Mate scholarships help cover education costs.

If you've ever fretted about how you'll pay for your children's university education, you're hardly alone. According to a 2011 survey by public opinion research organization Public Agenda, 78 percent of Americans share your concern. Scholarships provide financial relief from these concerns and help defray university costs. Many corporations provide scholarships for study at universities and colleges. These have included writing implement manufacturer Paper Mate, although the company doesn't offer scholarships at the time of publication.

  1. Paper Mate

    • Most people know Paper Mate as a producer of pens. In fact, Paper Mate is a leading producer of pens, mechanical pencils, markers, erasers and other writing implements. It's been in business for more than 50 years and garnered a reputation as a socially conscious corporation thanks to its green product partnerships and scholarship and sponsoring programs. Several larger corporations have bought and sold the Paper Mate company over the past few decades, and scholarship offerings have depended upon ownership.

    Paper Mate Scholarship

    • At the time of publication Paper Mate has discontinued its scholarship program. Its website stated: "We currently are not sponsoring any candidates or providing any scholarships." In the past the company hosted scholarship competitions, often based on essay submissions. These scholarship competitions originated with Paper Mate's original parent company, Frawley Pen Company. New ownership has transitioned away from the scholarship contest and focuses corporate giving on direct-donation investments to educational programs.

    Growing Up Investments

    • Paper Mate's website directs anyone looking for donations to visit the website of its parent company, Newell Rubbermaid, which acquired Paper Mate in a transaction involving former parent company Gillette's entire stationery products division. Newell Rubbermaid urges schools with scholastic needs to contact its "Investing in Community" program which donates time and money to accredited K-12 early-learning centers through its "Growing Up" investment program. This program looks to give young children and infants a "positive start and the tools to succeed in adulthood," according to its website.

    Getting Ahead Investments

    • Newell Rubbermaid also donates money and time for educational purposes through its "Getting Ahead" investment program. The company donates its products to accredited professional and trade schools that emphasize job training for women, seniors and people with disabilities. It also looks to focus its aid on people attempting to re-enter the workforce after a prolonged absence.
