Our Nursery Smells Like Diapers

Remove diaper odors from nurseries instead of dealing with the stench.

Enjoy using the nursery without having to hold your nose each time. Diaper pails are convenient in the nursery because they give you a quick place to throw away smelly diapers. However, they smell horrible after a while and can cause your nursery to become unpleasant. While you may not be able to eliminate the diaper odor from the nursery, you can significantly reduce or prevent it. Sticking to a regular cleaning schedule, deodorizing the pail and even using plastic liners or garbage bags can help control it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clean Diaper Pail

    • Placing dirty diapers in the diaper pail causes the odor to linger behind. A pail also contains germs and bacteria from the diapers, even if you line it with a trash bag. To eliminate the smelly diaper odor, disinfect the diaper pail with chlorine bleach. Wipe the inside of the pail down with a liquid dish soap and warm water, rinse it thoroughly, and then dry it. After you wash the inside of the pail, create a solution of 3/4 cup of bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water, and pour it into the diaper pail so it sits for five minutes. Then, rinse the pail with water, and allow it to air-dry to remove any lingering smells.

    Diaper Freshener

    • When you place dirty diapers into a trash can or diaper pail, the smell inevitably penetrates the air. Instead of dealing with the stench, mask the diaper smell with an essential oil such as vanilla, cinnamon, lavender or orange oil. The essential oil fills the air with a pleasant scent that keeps the nursery smelling fresh. Before you throw the diapers away, fill a clean spray bottle with an equal solution of vinegar and water. Add 10 drops of essential oil to the bottle, and shake it well. Spray the diapers before you place them into the pail. The vinegar naturally disinfects, while the oil leaves behind a scent that masks the odor.

    Trash Bags

    • While using a diaper pail may seem convenient, the dirty diapers continue to pile up. As the diapers sit in the nursery, the smell becomes stronger. Throw the dirty diapers directly into a trash bag, and take the bag out every day so you do not have to deal with the odor. If you want to keep the diaper pail, you can line it with a garbage bag, and take the diapers out every day. Make it a habit to take the diapers out daily to keep the nursery virtually odor-free.

    Baking Soda

    • Control the diaper odor with baking soda. Baking soda absorbs odors and dampness, which minimizes the odor in the nursery. Each time you place a diaper in the pail or throw it away in the trash, sprinkle baking soda over it. Baking soda does not cost a lot of money, so you can buy it in bulk to have it on hand when you need it. If you do not want to sprinkle baking soda on the diapers every time, line the bottom of the diaper pail or trash can with it. Change the baking soda out weekly to minimize any smell.
