Additional Tips for Getting Job Interviews
A professionally written resume printed on high quality stock paper looks nice, but it alone may not get you in the door. The trick to landing an interview is finding a way to make your resume, and you, stand out above the competition. Printing on colored paper, sending a gift or mailing the resume certified mail may get you noticed, but get creative to really make an impact.

Cover Letter
-
A dynamic cover letter is the first opportunity to grab the reader's attention. The letter should be concise, creative and flawless. This is your chance to highlight something outstanding and unique about yourself. Don't write a cover letter that simply sums up what is in your resume. Give the reader a reason to want to read your resume. Tell him why your skills are a perfect fit for his business and what you envision you can bring to the table. If the position will involve a relocation, also explain your draw to the area. Proofread the letter to be sure there are no typographical errors or misspellings.
Referral
-
Networking is a valuable tool when trying to land an interview. If you have friends or acquaintances working for the company, ask them to intervene on your behalf. If you and the recruiter have a mutual connection, refer to that in the cover letter or list them as a reference. Think creatively to find credible people to offer a referral including members of volunteer organizations, college professors or former employers whom you left in good standing. A solid recommendation or referral can be the move that tips the scales in your favor.

Delivery
-
Deliver your resume and cover letter in person. You may not be given the opportunity to meet with the appropriate person, but it is worth the chance that someone from human resources will see you. Make a good impression on the receptionist or person who accepts the resume from you. When delivering resumes, dress in business attire and be prepared for an on-the-spot interview. Make a follow-up call to be sure the information was delivered to the right person.
Role Reversal
-
Contact the hiring manager and request an interview. State the reasons why you believe you would be an asset to the company. Be assertive, but not pushy. Ask when would be a convenient time for you to come and meet with him. Give him options such as asking if one day over another would work better. Research the company thoroughly before making the call so you are prepared to explain why your skills will have a positive impact on current projects or issues.
