Best SEO techniques describe website contents honestly and accurately.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, involves the use of techniques to propel websites up search engine rankings. It also aims to strengthen brand awareness, increase the amount of traffic to the site and raise conversion rates. Effective SEO techniques combine knowledge of a website's market sector with tools such as keyword selection plus appropriate page content and graphic design.

  1. Page Titles

    • The title of each page should capture the page's content accurately and succinctly. The title is placed in the Heading (H1) tag. Limit the length of the heading to about 66 characters, including spaces. The reason for limiting the number of characters is that the major search engines cut off text over 66 characters and insert an ellipsis, or three dots. Searchers then have less idea if your site offers them exactly what they are looking for. Whereas, if the full title appears they know what it is about and are more likely to visit. Ensure that the title and headers reflect the page content, and not the overall site topic.

    Metadata

    • Metadata is a fuller description of a page's contents than is given in the title. However, this should still be limited to 156 characters. On some sites, part of the first sentence of an article may be used for the metadata. Good metadata descriptions are important because search engines often index it and display it in the search results. The metadata keyword field plays an important role. The keywords should represent the page content as accurately as possible. It is important that keywords are not overused in the content, which is known as "stuffing." Search engines prefer sites that provide quality information related to the page keywords.

    Content

    • SEO techniques cannot help a site with poor content. SEO consultant Steve Hoenisch advises website owners to focus on publishing quality content on every page and concentrate on in-depth information about a topic. Adding hyperlinks to closely related pages by highlighting words in the text is another favored technique. National newspapers use this effectively as it keeps readers at the site. For example, in a story about the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the acronym "DARPA" is highlighted. Clicking on the word takes readers to further stories about the agency.

    Black Hat SEO

    • SEO techniques are labelled as "black hat" or "white hat." The latter are SEO techniques that comply with accepted industry standards and search engine regulations for Web content. The "black hat" techniques attempt to manipulate search engine rankings with the use of hidden text, keyword stuffing the page content and optimizing irrelevant key words in the content metadata. Search engines are adept at discovering these tricks and ban websites using them from the search engine index.
