Evergreen Grants
Evergreen is a Canadian charity, founded in 1991, and specializing in creating and maintaining urban outdoor spaces that allow people to experience nature in the urban environment. They support greening projects on a local level; helping schools and communities create green spaces for everyone's use. They have teamed with several large donors to offer school and community grants for greening projects, as well as training, advice and support to those planning greening projects. Types of Grants
-
Evergreen offers two types of grants -- school grants and community grants. School grants are intended to help schools build outdoor classroom areas and food gardens. Community grants help community groups restore and develop urban green spaces. Applications and application advice can be downloaded from the Evergreen website, although all applications must be submitted as a hard copy. Information for all grants is generally available in August, and grants can be submitted beginning in September each year. Money is awarded until available funds are exhausted. All groups awarded a community grant must submit a final report to Evergreen.
School Grants
-
These grants are sponsored by Toyota. Any public or not-for-profit school may apply. The grounds must be accessible by the public during the day and on weekends, except when school is in session. Not-for-profit daycare centers are also eligible for the grants, which range from $500--$3,500 for schools and $500--$2,000 for daycare centers. School grants can be used to purchase native and heritage plants; to purchase tools and materials for building the garden or outdoor space; and to pay for garden designers and educators.

Walmart-Evergreen Grants
-
This Evergreen community grant program is sponsored by Walmart Canada and provides funding for creating and maintaining community gardens in urban and suburban areas. The awards may cover up to 50 percent of the budget for the project, up to $10,000. Walmart grants are open to community groups working on land accessible to the public. The group must be working with a partner, such as a city. Grants can be used to purchase plants and gardening tools; to pay for volunteer expenses; and to pay landscapers or other gardening or plant professionals.
Rebuilding Nature Grant
-
This Evergreen grant program is sponsored by Home Depot Canada. These grants focus on environmental stewardship and developing urban green spaces. Grants are awarded to cover 50 percent of the project budget, up to $12,000 plus a $2,000 Home Depot gift card to use on supplies. All projects must be on land that is publicly accessible, and must be in a community that also contains a Home Depot store. As with the Walmart grant, the group applying for the grant must be working with an institutional partner, such as a city. The grant will pay for tools, supplies, native plants, volunteer expenses and salaries for specialists and consultants.
