Danish First Date Traditions
The country of Denmark in Northern Europe has a rich culture and history, and its people, the Danes, enjoy an egalitarian society. Danish traditions abound when it comes to holidays, but in terms of dating, the Danes simply expect proper Danish etiquette. By understanding Danish family values and following the etiquette of giving and receiving gifts, dining and date behavior, you can impress a Danish date.

Danish Family Values
-
Before going on a date that is in true Danish style, knowing about Danish family values is important. The Danes tend to have small, nuclear families, which are at the center of Danish social structure. While families are small and close, Danish children are traditionally raised to be very independent and may develop an autonomous mindset. In Danish culture, getting married prior to having children is not required. Couples living together without being married first is a very normal circumstance.
Gift Etiquette
-
Before going on a date, most Danish men will bring flowers, chocolates or wine for their date. If invited to dinner at his date's home, sending flowers to her house in advance is considered proper etiquette. The flowers ought to be wrapped. For Danish women receiving gifts, opening them when received is customary; not opening the gift would be rude.

Dining Customs
-
When you go on a customary Danish date, follow a few important dining customs. First, turning down food is rude; try everything offered. While you may decline a second helping of food without being impolite, you must finish everything on your first plate. Should you make a toast with your date, raise your glass to eye-level and end the toast with "skol," the Danish word for "cheers" or "good health." Toasts are typically done around dessert time.
Proper Date Behavior
-
Like many other cultures, proper date behavior calls for both people to be courteous and respectful. In Danish culture, if someone is acting against the rules or being impolite, reprimanding that individual is common; therefore, improper behavior while on a date with a Dane might warrant a scolding word or a reproachful look. During the date, speak in a moderate voice. In Denmark, shouting or acting out loudly is rude and frowned upon. While on the date, keep the focus between the two of you.
