What Is the Proper Attire for a Black Tie Event?
As times change, so do the definitions of various dress codes. While men's black tie attire has remained somewhat standard since the early 20th century, women's dress is open to more interpretation. Much can be discerned from the invitation itself. Some hosts will specify "black tie optional" or "creative black tie," but even the apparently straight-forward "black tie" may allow for different looks, depending on the time of day, the location of the event and the reason for the celebration. Classic Black Tie

According to The Black Tie Guide, the classic black tie look dates back to the 1930s. For men, that equates to a black dinner jacket with matching pants, normally referred to as a tuxedo. The collared shirt is white, often with a pleated front. A black, silk bow tie, from which the attire gets its name, is standard. A cummerbund or waistcoat is worn beneath the jacket. Dress shoes and socks complete the look. For women, the standard is less definitive. Some consider a floor-length gown the only option, but modern times have seen shorter dresses accepted as formal wear. Cocktail dresses are acceptable for events in the late afternoon or early evening.
Black Tie Optional

If your invitation states "black tie optional," women's choices are bit more varied. A full gown, cocktail or little black dress and even evening separates are appropriate. Men may wear the classic black tie look or go slightly less formal, but not by much. Rather than a tuxedo, men can wear a dark suit. The white shirt remains a staple, but a dressy necktie can replace the bow tie.

Creative Black Tie

You may be invited to a "creative black tie" event. These still require a tuxedo for men, but some personality can be added to it. A black or dark colored shirt is acceptable. A matching bow tie and cummerbund in a color other than black or with a pattern also work for these occasions. Women can wear any type of dressy dress and add unusual or eye-catching jewelry and accessories.

White tuxedo jackets are acceptable at warm weather or daytime events. The Black Tie Guide suggests this look is appropriate in the United States only during the summer for outdoor events. Members of the military may always wear the appropriate uniform for black tie events. For a celebration featuring international attendees, the formal wear of each guest's country is encouraged.
