What Causes Craigslist Ads to Be Flagged?

Craigslist encourages its community to moderate the classified ads that are placed on the site. In the corner of each Craigslist ad is a list of four links. Each link represents a unique reason for reporting the ad. Each time you flag an ad, someone at Craigslist reviews it. Ads that receive too many flags are apt to be removed.

  1. Wrong Category

    • Craigslist creates categories for the advertisements posted to its site, such as "Housing" and "Jobs." Each category then has a list of subcategories; for instance, the "Jobs" category has a variety of career fields listed as subcategories. If your ad is placed in the wrong category, users may flag it to alert Facebook to its misplaced location. Advertisements that exist for the sole purpose of mentioning another ad in a different category are also considered to be misplaced.

    Prohibited Content

    • When you place an ad on Craigslist, the site asks you to adhere to its terms of use. If you post prohibited material, such as pornographic images, your advertisement is likely to be flagged by people who view it. Other content considered prohibited by Craigslist includes threats or harassment directed at a person or group; impersonation of another individual; or job posts that blatantly violate anti-discrimination laws by specifying a racial or gender preference for applicants.

    Spam

    • Ads that are posted too frequently are considered to be spam. Likewise, if you post the same ad in multiple cities and or/categories, users are allowed to flag it. If your ad only serves to promote a commercial website, it is also eligible to be flagged as inappropriate for Craigslist. While a link to an outside source is OK, Craigslist does not permit an ad on its site to only direct users away from Craigslist.

    Best of Craigslist

    • The "Best of Craigslist" flag is the one time an ad is flagged for a positive reason. The site encourages its users to flag humorous or otherwise memorable ads to be included in a list of the site's best advertisements. Flagging an ad for the "Best of Craigslist" does not guarantee that the ad will be placed on the list, but rather serves as a nomination for the list.
