Don't throw away ripped T-shirts; repurpose them.

Many of us have old T-shirts stored in our dresser drawers. Some of these shirts have become ripped and stained. Don't throw those old T-shirts away, however. Sewing and no-sew projects can transform ripped T-shirts into items such as quilts, scarves, headbands and jewelry.

  1. T-Shirt Quilt

    • Center the T-shirt graphics, and cut out squares. Arrange the cut squares in a pleasing arrangement. Sew the right sides together, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Use a coordinating fabric for your quilt back, and sew your quilt with or without quilt batting. Tie the layers with decorative yarn to hold them together. Hang the quilt on a wall, or use it as a throw.

    T-Shirt Scarf

    • Lay a large T-shirt flat on a table, and smooth out any wrinkles. Cut horizontally through both layers, creating thin fabric loops. Tug gently to stretch and elongate the loops, creating your scarf. Wear it as is, or add silk flowers, ribbons, yarn or paint.

    T-Shirt Headband

    • Cut the sleeves off a T-shirt. Cut thin loops using a rotary cutter. Pull the loops gently to elongate, curl and stretch them. Place several loops together, and wrap them around the seams in the loops. Cut one loop, and tie it around the loop bundle to secure it into place. Embellish the headband with ribbons or silk flowers if desired.

    T-Shirt Bracelet

    • Cut a sleeve off a T-shirt. Cut three thin loops using a rotary cutter. Hold the loops together, and sew one end to secure it. Tape the sewn end to a table. Braid the three loops together. Sew both ends together. You can cover your sewn seam with a silk flower or a piece of T-shirt or ribbon.
