Creative Ways to Celebrate Christmas
While gift giving, caroling, admiring your neighbors' Christmas lights and having a big Christmas dinner with your family are fun and festive ways to celebrate the Christmas holiday, you might want to consider some more unusual and creative ways to celebrate the Christmas season that can do good as well as reinforce your Christian faith.
-
Living Manger
-
With your family or your local church, organize a living nativity scene on your lawn, on the church's lawn or in a high foot traffic area if you can obtain municipal permission. Have a charity donation box on hand for the passersby to utilize if they feel moved by the Christmas spirit. Then give the money donated to a local charity.
Bible Drive
-
Encourage your family or a local organization like a church or social club to have a Bible drive. Sell Bibles and Bible covers to the local community with the proceeds to benefit a local charity. You can sell the items door-to-door, at a local event (if you have received permission to do so from the organizers) or even online by setting up a simple website and getting the word out among your real-life contacts and online social networks.
-
Free Store
-
Organize a free store in your local community. A free store is stocked with items that people don't have a use for anymore and then bring to the free store hoping that someone else can use them. Anyone can freely give and take from the store.
It's a Wonderful Life Food Drive
-
Invite all your friends and relatives to a Christmas movie marathon and encourage them to bring over cans of food for a food drive. Screen movies like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and serve seasonal party food. After the event, drive all the cans of food from the food drive, as well as your own canned food donations, to your local food bank.
Ask for Gifts for Others
-
Instead of asking for items you probably don't really need this Christmas season, ask for gifts for others and encourage your family to do the same. One option is to ask for an Oxfam Unwrapped gift. Gift givers can choose gifts like providing school supplies, mosquito nets or toilets to people in developing countries. Another option is to ask for donations to Charity: Water, an organization that provides drinking water to people in developing countries.
