Many households have numerous power and gardening tools consuming the majority of a car garage structure. In fact, some homeowners cannot fit their vehicle into the garage since it is so cluttered with backyard necessities. Sheds are a practical storage alternative, freeing space within the garage. Material Choices
-
Typical, old-fashioned storage sheds were made of basic wood planks, much like a quintessential barn structure. However, modern storage sheds are constructed of several different materials. Vinyl, metal, wood and plastic are all viable choices in the current storage shed marketplace. In fact, some sheds use a combination of materials for creating one structure, such as vinyl siding with a wooden frame.
Economical Material
-
Metal is the most inexpensive material choice for a water-resistant storage shed. Most metal sheds are constructed of aluminum, corrugated iron or galvanized steel. These thin metal sheets fasten to a sturdy metal frame, producing a long-lasting structure against the weather elements. Proper assembly of the shed ensures that rainwater does not infiltrate the shed's interior, adding to its water resistant nature. In fact, metal shed options include a baked enamel finish for some models. The finish gives the metal a unique color, based on the consumer's desires, and protects the metal from rusting over time.

Drawbacks
-
Metal provides strength for the storage shed structure, but is susceptible to dents. Any debris striking the storage shed, such as hailstones, can produce unsightly dents. Repairing dents in a storage shed can be a costly venture. Additionally, metal sheds not equipped with a baked enamel finish can rust over time, compromising the structure's water resistance.
Cost
-
Galt Technology reports that a relatively large metal storage shed, measuring 10-by-14 feet, sells for approximately $700, at the time of publication. For this amount of money, consumers can easily store lawn mowers, power tools and lawn furniture. Smaller metal sheds sell for much less, some as inexpensive as $350.
