The basic skill needed to be a tattoo artist is in drawing. In order to become a tattoo artist in Maryland or any other state, you must be trained. You do not go to school for training. Instead, you do an apprenticeship with a working tattoo artist. Generally, you are not paid for this, and you may even have to pay to be an apprentice. If you are paid, it will be a very small amount per week. Apprenticeships generally last 12 months.
