Safety Settings for Facebook

Facebook, a social networking website, is ideal for getting in touch with new and old friends, but only if doing so doesn't jeopardize your safety. Together with Facebook's emergence came several online threats specific to the site. However, Facebook's privacy settings allow you to customize your user account to protect yourself.

  1. Security

    • Facebook's security settings are different from its privacy settings. To access your security settings page, select "Account," "Account Settings" and "Security." In this window, you can activate secure browsing, login notifications, approvals and list any recognized devices that you log in to your Facebook account. These settings will help prevent your account from being hacked.

    Privacy

    • An important safety precaution of using Facebook is customizing your account's privacy settings. To do so, click "Account," then "Privacy Preferences." An ideal way to increase your safety is to make your account impossible to find by searching. You can control who can search for you, send you messages and send you friend requests by clicking "View Settings" under the "Connecting on Facebook" menu.

    Profile

    • Online predators can learn a significant amount about you if they can access your Facebook profile. To block access from people who aren't friends, navigate to the "Privacy Preferences" page and click "Customize Settings." Here, you can choose who can see your profile and more specifically, who can see your information page, photos and wall.

    Apps

    • Keeping your computer safe can be difficult if you routinely accept or download Facebook apps that may contain malware. To control your profile's apps, go to the "Privacy Preferences" page, then press "Edit your Settings" under "Apps and Websites." On this screen, you can edit which apps you use, control the information that you share with apps and remove any apps that contain spam.
