Entertainment trends are a rich source of 1980s costume ideas.

Few decades are as fertile as the 1980s for inspiring costumes to wear to parties and similar events. The time period offers distinctive fashions as well as plenty of classic movies and musicians to give you some ideas. Guys don't have to work too hard to put together a simple 1980s costume, but those who want to wow their peers can assemble a more complex outfit. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Film

    • The 1984 movie "Ghostbusters" offers an enduringly popular costume choice in the form of the uniforms of the Ghostbusters themselves. These consist of a beige-colored boiler suit or jumpsuit, with the Ghostbusters logo on the chest; a futuristic-looking toy gun and backpack complete the look. Indiana Jones is another 80s character with a distinctive look; recreate the adventurer's outfit by donning a brown leather jacket, white shirt and khaki or brown trousers. Grab some rope to use as a whip, add a toy revolver in a holster and don't forget a brown fedora hat.

    Television Shows

    • A simple but stylish look is the "Miami Vice" costume, consisting of a white suit with a colorful t-shirt underneath, loafers (no socks), sunglasses and maybe a plastic firearm. Inspired by the classic kids TV show "Masters of the Universe," the He-Man look is most suitable for guys who have the muscles to go with it; you'll need red shorts, big red boots and a harness across your chest that can be fashioned from tin foil or cardboard painted grey; add a plastic or foam sword and a yellow wig.

    Trends

    • Some of the music in the '80s inspired fashion trends. To go for a Goth rocker look you'll need black jeans and a black t-shirt or sweater with a trench coat or biker jacket over it. Accessories are key, so wear an ankh around your neck or some rings with skulls, or perhaps wear some black or white gloves; add black lipstick or eyeliner. A similar look is based around the 1980s hair metal scene. Again, you'll want black jeans and a t-shirt, but this time accessorize by wearing a bandana around your forehead or neck and a pair of cowboy boots; an over-the-top '80s big hair wig completes this outfit.

    Sport

    • To dress as a '80s athlete, get some neon shorts matched with a white vest or t-shirt, and wear striped socks all the way up to your knees. Accessories can include a baseball cap or ray ban shades. Recreate the look of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan starting with a yellow or red tank-top adorned with the slogan "Hulkamania" and yellow shorts. Buy a long blonde wig and add a red bandana wrapped around your head.
